What a punk-ass bitch move! He claims that Audiences didn't understand what he was trying to do. I've been saying it since 2018:
To deconstruct, you need to construct first.
Now, he blames audiences for not understanding his "multi-layered storytelling".He thinks that folks were expecting some "superhero fights other superhero romp."
He then says:
"And we gave them this sort of hardcore deconstructivist, heavily layered, experiential modern mythological superhero movie that needs…that you really need to pay attention to."
Ugh! Where to begin?
"To deconstruct something, you need to construct something first."
Man of Steel and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice were supposed to be the cornerstone of the DCEU. You cannot start to build an entire universe based on deconstruction of its characters. Heavily layered? As a 2-ply sheet of toilet paper...I mean the little square unfolded. That's as deep as his multi-layered storytelling goes. Throwing everything but the kitchen sink with a bunch of misleading or pointless plotlines a multi-layered story does not make... using Zack's "logic", The Room is a multi-layered storytelling masterpiece. Sorry Mr. Wiseau for comparing you to Snyder.
The Congressional hearings about Superman led nowhere and to be honest, were a waste of time. Lex Luthor was horribly misused, mischaracterized, and quite honestly, was incredibly incoherent in his motivations and arc. I mean, frame Superman by using Lexcorp proprietary bullets? Having access of all known metahumans and he picks the grieving 1% orphan who runs around in tights beating up the mentally ill. A dude whose literal superpower is money... is the best choice that Luthor thought would kill Superman. Meanwhile, Luthor is also making an uncontrollable Superman Killing Monster.
Then we have Batman: Because of the77 Metropolis Oncident, he got a Murderboner towards Superman and started killing criminals left and right, yet the guy who killed Robin is still alive and kicking. If Batman were to forsake his "One Rule", in pretty much, every single universe he does, the main target would be Joker. So, murderboner Batman is hellbent on killing Superman until Superman begs for his mommy, whose name is the same as Batman's. Can you see how stupid that sounds?
S: "I hate you, you're a douche!"
B: "I'mma kill ya, illegal alien!"
S: "Save Martha!"
B: "Dafuq you say?"
S: "Martha!"
L: "Dat his Mom's, name, yo!"
B: "My Mom's name is Martha too!"
S: "Friends?"
B: "Superfriends!"
Basically, all what Snyder did was deflect. He failed as a director in telling a good story and is passing the blame unto the audience. His job as a director was to tell a story. "If the audience didn't understand the story" then that failure lies on the storyteller. But here the problem isn't that the audience "didn't understand the story". The problem is that the story Snyder told was bad from the get go. Focusing on Easter Eggs and references does not make a movie deep.
Snyder and Goyer made up the storyline for
BvS while Goyer made the script and went through rewrites from Terrio. Therefore, not only Snyder directed, but was a key player behind the story's writing. Then again, he comes from the same school as Michael Bay where Flash over Substance reigns supreme... but unlike Bay, whi knows he makes shitty movies, Snyder thinks he's the next Kubrick, while he's nothing more than a third-rate Michael Bay.
I don't know if Gunn's plan for DC will work, but at least what little he's revealed sounds far better than:
"Batman gets gangraped in prison"
"Superman is evil or an antagonist most of the DCEU"
"Batman impregnates Lois and Supes raises the third-rate Damian Wayne".
"Atlanteans and Amazons have a little Kryptonian in them. "
"The real Doomsday is out there in space."
Most of these were thankfully scrapped, but the problem is that all those dumb ideas stem from Snyder and he gets pissy when people call out his bad ideas.
So, long story short: Fuck you Zack Snyder. The problem here wasn't that the audiences failed to understand your story. It was that your story sucked ass, but your storytelling was just as awful.
