With Metroid Dread's ending we got a couple of revelations that are kinda shocking... OK not THAT shocking if you played Fusion...
Samus is the ultimate weapon after becoming a Human, Chozo (2 different tribes), and Metroid Hybrid. Not to mention she was also a Phazon generator for a time... Basically a lot of freaky stuff has happened to Samus. Will we return to worlds mentioned on the lore?
I KNOW Zebes and SR388 might have been destroyed, but we still have K-2L... mentioned in past lore as the wrold where Samus lost her parents... even SR387, which was mentioned in Metroid Fusion. These would be "new worlds" from a gameplay perspective, but classic in a narrative perspective.
The other option is to do like Dread and have a brand new original world. My biggest concern lies on what direction will they take with the narrative? Metroid Dread confirmed that there are no more Metroids aside from Samus. The Space Pirates "have been eliminated". Where DO WE GO FROM HERE? Her main enemies are no more. Her new Metroid abilities would make the gameplay drastically different. Not to mention how contrived it would be if EVERY WORLD has Chozo upgrades.
The only place I see the narrative going is with Samus being hunted for her human/Metroid Hybrid DNA... unless there's a planet with a hidden cache of our "now extinct" favorite life-sucking alien jellyfish. Unstable clones of the Metroids COULD work, but it's a cheap plot device.
The other direction is playing as a new character and be forced to hunt down Samus. I personally don't want this. It's an interesting angle and new character means different gameplay. What scares me is the possibility of phasing out Samus. It would be like removing Link from LoZ. It's OK for a DLC or a NG+ side story but not the main direction that they should take. I'm not against Samus being hunted, but I'm against villainizing Samus. I mean last time they did that it wasn't well received.
But knowing Nintendo, they'll probably remake Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion before getting a new NEW game. Now we wait... a New Metroid game will come... unlike Startropics...
