I recently found out about the Director's cut for Rocky IV. Stallone is hellbent on removing the robot... who was written into the story due to it being used to treat Sargeoh Stallone's autism by some dude named Sylvester Stallone...
This isn't some weird studio interference forcing the Robot into the story... This is some Sylvester Stallone interference forcing the Robot into the story. Now Stallone is all "Yo! The robot sucks and I'm taking it out!" Nononono Mishter Shtallone... You don't get to remove the robot YOU FORSHED INTO THE SHTORY... and I have no idea why I used the Connery accent, but whatever.
While the robot is a ridiculous addition, it makes sense in a weird kind of way. With Rocky being noveau riche he'd be most likely to splurge on such an extravagant gift like that. It also shows that despite the fight with Lang, Rocky is still a bit too soft and "domesticated". Which is why Rocky trains in the Wilderness, vs Drago's advanced training facility... somewhat mirroring the Clubber Lang training montage from III.
Also, The Robot shows another layer of Paulie's bad character traits. While the robot does nothing for the main storyline it helps reinforce Paulie's flaws that lead to Rocky V.
