This is the synopsis:
Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker. They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.
Can you see what's wrong? Here's the synopsis of the REAL Bewitched:
A beautiful witch named Samantha meets and marries a mortal named Darrin Stephens. While Samantha complies with Darrin's wishes to become a normal suburban housewife, her magical family disapproves of the mixed marriage and frequently interferes in the couple's lives. No single mom crap or him being a loser... Not to mention the whole "black magical woman is inferior to a tall white dude with a full head of hair" crap.
While, yes, the show WAS a subtle allegory to mixed race marriage, it doesn't mean that it has to be turned into a LITERAL mixed race marriage. I'd dare say this change is racist... Think about it:
Black Magical Woman with a fatherless child marries a white man. Can't you see the stereotypes jumping at you?
-single black mother...
-Mystical exotic person of color.
Will they go with generic witchcraft enragong a bunch of people or will they go with Yoruba influences and enraging a bunch of different people?
-White husband is a loser... (isn't that literally every single modern sitcom?)
Also, also: wouldn't this be cultural appropriation? I want an Asian Fresh Prince Reboot, a Latino Family Matters reboot, and a WHITE Axel Foley Beverly Hills cop remake... or is that racist?
Here's the thing: if you wanted a show that could be rebooted and hit with the "diversity brush" it's NOT Bewitched. It's I dream of Jeannie.
Jeannie is a Genie, or a Djinn... Which would lend itself to have a Middle Eastern woman as a lead.
But better yet: STOP GENDER/RACE BENDING REBOOTS!
