We know about Playmates crying to Nickelodeon like a little bitch about Super7 Ultimates. This has made S7 branch out in odd directions... like adding a 2003 line to dilute the amount of vintage. Making NEW VARIANTS, but the real answer lies in making "NEW VINTAGE" characters. By that I mean, adding characters from the 1980-1990s to the line. Personally, I prefer the MOTUC Approach of adding everything under a "vintage inspired style."
But for the sake of this rant I'll stick to Vintage TMNT. Meaning Mirage, Fred Wolf toon, Associated videogames, comics, manga, OVA with the cutoff point being The Next Mutation.
In other words doing a Reverse NECA. Since they've been adding Toy characters to the cartoon line and filtering them through a "Fredwolfizicer machine" (suddenly I felt a bit Neitlichian... Logistics, that style's retired, buy the sub, Fuck you Nefty!)
Taking Comic, Toon, Videogame characters and giving them a Varnerized vintage Playmates look. For example:
Punk Frogs:
Taking both The Ultimates Genghis and the theoretical Ultimates Napoleon, with new heads and accessories, we could get a Rasputin and an Attila.
I've mentioned Burne's girlfriend Tiffany since a "Playmatesized" version of her could have started life as a repainted Ravishing April with a new head. A Playmatesized Null would be an interesting character to have. The Firefreaks from the first NES game would be a cool addition to have. Plus, Super7 could release a Blue Flame GITD Firefreak Variant.
Hell, a lot of these characters were so underdetailed that Super7 could get away with making up stuff.
For example, Sprazzo the Chainsaw Maniac:
We could have Sprazzo in Prison Orange pants with white laceless shoes shirtless with a heavily scarred torso (Think Victor Zsasz) bare arms reuse Casey's with new forearms and hands.
Adding a few heads:
-Hannibal Lecter inspired mask
-Blond Casey repaint
- full head Iron Mask
-Jason X inspired mask fused to his flesh
Accessories:
Shackles and chains that attach to his body.
Think J.Eisenberg Luthor by Mattel. But with real chains and plastic shackles.
-chainsaw
-a smaller TMNT enemy as a little buddy.
I plussed up a shirtless dude with a questionable head/mask
Characters with multiple media appearances can be used to sidestep Playmates' whining. Hothead has appeared in comics and on the NES Tournament Fighters, so that could be exploited to bring him into the fold if Playmates acts like a little bitch. Chu Hsi the Warrior Dragon is essentially a yellow Hothead. So, taking the Chu Hsi design, adding some Toy flourishes to the armor and using gradients of orange and yellow to create a hybrid between Chu Hsi and NES TF Box Art Hothead.
For accessories:
Elongated neck as a nod to the toy
Dao sword
Chinese bow with flaming Arrows
Flame effect for the flame spitting head.
While that approach may not work on everyone, there are a few that could be exploited. Here's hoping for Japanese Bimbo Irma.
We have tons of options to get Pizzaface... Just release him already, Kyle!
Multiple Turtle variants is not the answer.
(I know the irony, since I do a ton of variant lists... like stripper Irma...) but I'd be invested more in New characters than variants...
We still Need Don the Undercover Turtle, dammit! Does Super Shredder count as a variant? Or Krang's Android Body?
