With the "Nu-He-Man" gaining traction, I'm afraid of a MOTU videogame. We saw the horrible 1980s games. The not so great 200X games... sadly the PS2 one was Europe only. Then we saw the Mobile games, with the first one having potential, while the second one was lazy as fuck... we even saw the crappy tower defense game that Had He-Man as a not so hidden character...
Kids these days are more into games than toys. I wouldn't be surprised is Mattel opts the lazy ass approach of Whoring He-Man with Fortnite...
I've said it before, and I'll say it again: MATTEL NEEDS to invest in videogames and do it right, otherwise they're going to keep trailing behind others. They had attempts, but they went for the cheapest option, which yielded shovelware results. Just like they missed out on Barbie for Toy Story, Mattel missed out on Ed Boon and a cameo for He-Man in Injustice. Ever since MK Armageddon, the MK Team had been subtly begging for getting their hands on He-Man. Yet Mattel is scratching their collective buttholes and sniffing their fingers afterwards.
But where does this rambling lead us? There should be a NU-HE-MAN VIDEOGAME for the kids and a CLASSIC HE-MAN VIDEOGAME for the old farts. The NU-HE-MAN game should be FUN, easy to play but hard to Master. The thing behind the creative aspects of the cartoon, namely the writers, should be heavily involved with the game.
From a gameplay perspective I'm thinking something along the lines of a hybrid between the Lego games and Marvel Ultimate Alliance. It should be a fun romp actiony game with some exploration. Nothing too complicated, given the target audience.
The Classic MOTU game is a conundrum. I've mentioned that an Open World RPG game could work for a He-Man/Adam game. But that a True MOTU experience for the MASTERS part of Masters of the Universe, a Fighting game would be best. That way you can pick your favorite characters and duke it out.
A slightly less story immersive game that is a happy medium between RPG and Fighting would be the good old beat'em up. Think a He-Man themed Golden Axe kind of game. It's a tried-and-true formula that has worked with franchises like:
The Avengers, The Punisher, Spider-Man, X-Men, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Alien versus Predator, The Simpsons, and others.
A 2D Platforming game is also a proven success, with the first mobile game. A 2.5D Platformer like Metroid Dread jas proven that even in the 21st Century that old school genre from the 80s still has the power... (reference completely intended) The best part of the 2.5D platformer is the DLC potential. Whole I'm not a huge fan of DLC, I must admit that it COULD bring a lot of replayability IF DONE RIGHT.
Now that I think of it, a Platformer could be an alternative for Nu-He-Man as well... but if Mattel keeps their quarter assed ways. We could end up with shit like this:
A She-Ra Game? This? Not even Mattel would be as dumb. |
A Bejeweled clone with some Shit-Reee crap added... this is even far worse than the no longer available Tappers of Grayskull... At least we didn't get Angry Avians. Where He-Man fadtball specials Stratos, Hawke, Delora, and Buzz-off (because we ran out of Flying MOTU characters) at Skeletor's forces.
All jokes aside, THIS is the kind of crap that ruins properties. Not to mention how it sets back women in gaming by 40 years. But with our luck, Mattel is too incompetent to actually get a real (and good) MOTU videogame out... much less 2...
