The -ish is there due to delays with Wave 1 ending up in 2018 and wave 2 being super delayed to further 2018. This "look back to the year" is a holdover of the Matty era. Back when all lines must end BS. This is where I look at the items of the year whether I own them or not and give a grade based on general perceptions of the products.
Ultimates:
These were a placeholder wave for S7 to bring out some key Characters and the last figures made using the Mattel Factory.
I own them all except Ram Man.
Teela: A-
The figure is a great replacement for the 2009 one. But the preheating the head requirements for head exchange scares me.
He-Man: A
This was an improvement over the Original Matty Release, especially with the extra heads. The hair color was an odd choice.
Skeletor: A+
Puré Vintage Goodness, or evilness in his case. The vintage accuracy makes him very endearing, but to me, the Cape is what makes him stand above the original release.
Faker: A
I have stated that the lack of Oo-Larr head in him is what keeps him from being perfection.
Ram Man: B+
While I do not own one, I handled one. He's sturdy but the paint requires some aftermarket touch ups...
Power-Con Exclusives:
Super7 began using a new factory with these and lost access to the tool bank.
Snake Trio:
Terroar: B
The issue with the head removal for the neck extension is not easy to forgive. Making his interchangeable weapons incompatible with past releases was a boneheaded move.
Lord Gr'asp: B+
The better figure of the trio, which Is a bit odd, seeing that Plasmar was the one I thought would win this.
Plasmar: B-
Glued on armor and his Rio guns falling off of his arms kinda ruined things for many. Great ideas, but the execution was lacking.
Mini Comics variants:
Trap Jaw: C
Non articulated jaw is...
Other than that he's cool... Except for the incompatible weapons!
Stratos: C-
Yikes! Seems like Avionians have a lot of issues with Super7. Floppy wings Some have had issues with his joints.
Adam: D+
Yikes in tights! Stiff joints, can't hold his sword without risking hand breakage, head Sculpt is competing with ToyBiz Rogue and Scarlet Witch in the ugly department. But that holster, amirite?
Yeah, you can see that things aren't so great looking for Super7... Let's see how the first wave fares...
S7 MOTUC WAVE 1:
Quakke: B-
He's pretty fly for a New Adventures guy... Problem is the horrendous QC on this wave. Some have frozen joints, which hampers the fun of him. Then we have the heavy rock that can't be held by his flimsy staff. But he and Lodar are the two figures with less QC issues...
Fangor: B
He's the best of them all... If you don't have QC issues. Some issues stem from the little buddy being incomplete, but the worst offense is fangs glued on improperly.
Lodar: A
He's pretty basic, but very few issues with him. He almost feels like a Mattel-made figure.
Hawke: F
You already know why she has that grade.
Nearly everything that could've gone wrong went wrong. She can't use her accessories without looking like a moron. Her head sits too low, she's a bit too short, her mold somehow got warped not to mention the sloppy paint job on her... But she's a bit better than Filmation Teela.
Club Grayskull:
Hordak: C-
Broken torsos, sloppy paint applications and dangerous arm removal to use the cannon... Or in my personal case, can't stand at all!!
Tri-Klops: C
The visor is getting stuck with something and pulling it loose as Flynn stated doesn't work, since one false move and you break the ring holding the head to the figure.(I was lucky) If it wasn't for that, he would've been great.
Teela: F
She's a failure. Abysmal QC, warped molds, shrunk down dramatically. Can't remove her head, lest it pulls off the ring part of the peg holding her head to the body.
Man-at-arms: A+
He's the best of Club Grayskull and I'd dare call him the best Non-Ultimate figure from the entire "year". The only QC issues I've heard is the Blast effect breaking at worse. My personal nitpick is non-removable armors.
There you have it... As an added bonus, I'll figure out the average With and WITHOUT the Ultimates and post my final thoughts on Super7's first "year".
Overall rating With the Ultimates is: C+
This SHOULD HAVE BEEN AN EASY B or B+ but, QC issues on some figures pulled down the average. I've been rooting hard for Super7 to succeed for two reasons. To continue the MOTU lines and getting more MOTUC GOODNESS, and almost as important: to prove Neitlich wrong. (The whole "without him MOTUC cannot survive" BS.)
Without the Ultimates it's a C
And this story cannot repeat itself with wave 2. Super7 needs to smarten up, cause if these issues persist, the will lose support. I know I've said this multiple times, but it HAS TO BE SAID. S7 has a lot more to lose than Mattel and I want them to succeed.
