Spawn creator, Todd McFarlane claims that the Hard R rated Spawn movie WILL come out this year even if he has to do a kickstarter for it.
This would be Todd's second threat of a Kickstarter campaign. The first one is supposed to be a Marvel Legends styled reboot of his Spawn toyline starting with a 94 wave Marvel Legendsized. I have a huge issue with that. Kickstarter was made for the little guys to get some funding to bring a dream into a reality. Not something for big companies to abuse and exploit.
McFarlane Toys is not a little toy company. Sure, it isn't on par with Mattel or Hasbro, but it's big enough to have the DC Universe licence, Mortal Kombat, Harry Potter, One Punch Man, Naruto, Star Trek, and other licenses. You're a big leagues when you get the main collectors line for DC Comics. Even if he used "kickstarter" as a generic term for crowd-funding campaign, it's a bit scummy of him.
Especially since he already has a 40Million Spawn movie and the HBO animated series as achievements. Not exactly a little guy here either.
While I respect Todd as an artist, as a businessman, he's been losing my respect every single time he opens his mouth about the movie that THIS TIME IS REALLY HAPPENING! Just like George R.R. Martin is going to release Winds of Winter "this year"... for real you guys!
