Martin Scorsese is promoting a new movoe, so he's talking crap about superheroes. Even Stallone has blamed Superhero movies for the "lack of action movies". Now the next group of people blaming Superhero movies are Sci-Fi movie folks. Sonce The Creator barely made 1.6 Million on its opening weekend, folks are blaming Superhero movies. Ignoring completely the dual strikes between actors and writers, which reduces promotion down to almost zero. Then there's the whole in less than 3 months after release the movies end up in streaming services, sometimes as fast as 45 days.
Movies are ridiculously expensive. Going to watch a movie ALONE is roughly $30 for ticket, popcorn and soda. The federal Minimum wage in the US is $7.25 per hour. Going to the movies ALONE is half a day's shift for a Minimum Wage employee. Why would I spend half a day's wage on a movie that I can watch at home and the experience won't be so different? It's not like Avatar that the theater experience is a million times better than the "at home experience".
Audiences have become picky, but at the same time, Hollywood is expecting prepandemic box office in a post pandemic world. Audiences are pickier now and any movie that they're lukewarm about, they're going to wait until streaming. It's cheaper for them.
In MY personal case, I wouldn't be caught dead watching a Scorsese film at a theater. The reason is simple: The experience of watching a Scorsese film at the theater or on my phone is essentially the same. Same thing with a Wes Anderson movie. That's not to mention that my last few movie expereinces have varied from it's good to Zoardammit, I should've just waited for the tv edit. Also, Expend4bles was absolute crap. Even Superhero movies I've been picky about them... Hell, to this day I haven't seen across the Spiderverse... completely. I've seen bits and pieces at work during break but not the whole thing.
It's not "Superhero movies" it's that the movie theater experience is no longer susteinable.
